Polymarket up or down markets, explained

An up/down market is a binary market on whether an asset finishes a fixed window higher or lower than it started. They are also called short-duration crypto event contracts. A round opens, a reference price is fixed, and when the window closes the round settles UP or DOWN. The shortest run over five minutes.

How a round works

1. The round opens

A reference price is fixed at the start of the window. This is the price the round settles against, often called the price to beat.

2. The window runs

Five or fifteen minutes, depending on the market. The price moves above or below the reference.

3. The round settles

At the close, the price is compared with the reference. At or above settles up; below settles down.

Why the price you see can differ from the price that settles

Venues do not all settle against the same number. Some use a time-weighted average price rather than a single instantaneous tick, so the figure displayed on a venue page can lag a spot price quoted elsewhere. This is the most common source of confusion in these markets, and it is why the price a round settles against is worth watching separately from spot.
